Voyageur paddling in Fort Langley

To start the year we have an annual New Years Day voyageur paddle.

Every Saturday morning, year-round, we paddle from the Bedford Channel in Fort Langley (view of voyageur canoe on Bedford Channel with the church in background).

In the summer we also have a weekly evening paddles and moonlight paddles.

The destination of the voyageur paddles are decided by the member participants.

They may choose to visit Derby Reach (canoe on the beach with tug and barge)

or cross the Fraser River to paddle up Kanaka Creek (canoe under foot bridge).

November 8 and 9 2008 Harrison River

This annual one day trip is so popular now that we do it two days so we can take twice as many paddlers.

We launch at Harrison, paddle down the Harrison River, stopping along the way for lunch, to watch the spawning salmon, and the many eagles that come to feed on the dying spawned salmon.

We pull out at Kilby, which is just before the Harrison River enters the Fraser River and trailer the boats home to Fort Langley.

October 11 2008 Cranberry Festival Voyageur Races

The Cranberry Voyageur Races are an annual event for our club and held in conjunction with the Fort Langley Cranberry Festival on the Saturday of Thanksgiving Weekend.

We have several heats around marks in the river and the final includes a beach run and pumpkin drop.

Fun is had by both spectators and paddlers.

September 5 to 7 2008 Thompson River

We trailer two voyageur canoes and had two tandem canoes along for a weekend of fun in the sun, camping just outside of Savona, and getting wet in the Thompson River.

Everyone had so much fun we would like to make this an annual trip.

August 3 2008 Brigade Days

Our club is involved with the annual Brigade Days in Fort Langley. We invite everyone to join us to paddle from Mission to Fort Langley where we reenact the arrival of the voyageurs to the many spectators that come out for Brigade Days. We parade to the fort for a welcome and then a meal of bannock and beans. This year we joined the paddlers enroute from Hope to Vancouver, on their continuation of the Fort St James trip, and together we arrived in Fort Langley in a large flotilla.

August 1 to 4 2008 Hope to Vancouver

This is the continuation of the Fort St James to Vancouver reenactment of Simon Fraser's trip down the Fraser River. The previous part of the trip started in Fort St James and paddled to Alexandria.

This part of the trip put in at Hope and paddled down the Fraser River. We launched two of our voyageur canoes along with several others that joined in this part of the trip.

Also included was the Bridage Days reenactment of the voyageur arrival at Fort Langley with many other voyageur canoes.

We camped enroute at Seabird Island, Hatzic Rock, and Burnaby and then paddled on to a reenactment arrival at Maritime Museum.

July 18 to 27 Fort St James to Quesnel

Our club paddled two voyageur canoes starting at Fort Saint James reenacting the voyageurs departure with cargo to be delivered down the river. We were accompanied by other voyageur canoes from the area. We camped en route along the river. We paddled for a week reenacting the arrival of the voyageur canoes along the way, at Prince George and Quesnel. We paddled on to Alexandria to complete Simon Fraser's route.

The following weekend we continued our reenactment of Simon Fraser's paddle from Hope to Vancouver including Brigade Days in Fort Langley.

June 8 2008 Deep Cove

This was planned to be an over night trip camping at Granite Falls but as we did not get enough participants for an overnight trip it was changed to a one day trip. We then got enough paddlers to fill two voyageur canoes.

The two canoes paddled north past the old station.

As it was only a one day trip they could only look towards Granite Falls, the original destination, for the weekend trip, but they needed to return to the trailers before dark.

May 3 2008 Nicomekl River

Two voyageur canoes paddled down the Nicomekl River to the mouth and continued around the shores of Crescent Beach to meet the trailer in White Rock.

March 30 2008 Reifel Island

We trailered the two voyageur canoes to Westham Island on a bright and sunny, yet crisp day.

The water is protected as we round the island and see lots of snow geese on the shore.

We decided to go to Steveston for lunch which was an exicting crossing with some large ocean swells.

February 23 2008 Barnston Island

Two boats of Voyageur paddlers paddled down the Fraser River from Fort Langley to Barston Island on a crisp, clear spring day.

A beautiful view of Mount Baker up the Fraser River.
